If you know me, you will know how much I utterly adore drawing horses - especially when I can use the lessons I've learnt over the years to help you!

I am super proud of this one and I really tried to push myself with this piece and I just love how it turned out.

Don't get me wrong, darker subjects can be super challenging to capture... too many layers might result in over blending and a muddy appearance whereas not enough could result in flat or dull pieces.

In this masterclass I demonstrate how to use a range of tones - from deep dark tones to subtle highlights to give the horse depth and dimension.

Another common struggle is with making dark subjects look shiny without losing the dark, rich colour. This class provides my tips and techniques on balancing light reflections with the underlying darker tones.

As I said above, overblending can lead to a muddy appearance, especially when working with dark colours. Learn precise blending techniques that retain the integrity of each layer, ensuring your final piece is vibrant and clean.

Key lessons include:

- Learn how to accurately depict the play of light using a balance of warm and cool hues, crucial for capturing the realistic sheen of this black horse’s coat.

- Learn the importance of building up layers of colour to achieve depth and richness, crucial in making the horse's coat appear both dark and glossy.

- Learn how to effectively blend to create a smooth, polished finish on Pastelmat.

In this class we cover colour theory as well as how to really ensure your contrasts are popping.

I do use a lot of different colours in this class to demonstrate the sort of shades that can be used to create differed hues and depth but if you do not have all the colours then do not worry - my demonstration is just that, a demonstration to help you pick the sort of colours you could use.
