When working on white paper with coloured pencils, it can sometimes be hard to get the desired striking results, especially when working with a light subject.

When we add a toned background, it can significantly help achieve beautiful results without having to spend hours building up the depth.

When we work on a toned paper, we essentially have the midtones already in place so to build form, we need to lighten and darken certain areas to achieve perspective.

In this coloured pencil tutorial, I will teach you the techniques and share advice to create a beautiful grey horse on a toned paper. From focusing on cool and warm hues, how to layer and blend pencils to achieve seamless yet striking results and how to achieve subtle transitions to achieve light and shadow.
